1. The length requirement varies depending on the age group:
17 & under : 5,000 characters or less (approx. 1000 words in length).
18-22 : 7,500 characters or less (approx. 1500 words in length).

There is no minimum requirement, but 1,000 words is the approximate length you should aim for.

2. You can certainly apply if you have not been in prison! The essays are simply supposed to be compassionate responses to the problem of the imprisoned child.
